FTP Access to
your Website |
|
To access your website via FTP you will need to use a "Virtual
Directory" to take you to the root of your site. Previously, it
was possible to directly access the
root of your site using only the domain name (ie.
YOURDOMAIN.COM). It is now necessary to access the root of your
site using a virtual directory path such as this: YOURDOMAIN.COM/YOURDOMAIN.
Note that most FTP clients require that you put this necessary
information into different areas, not in a single location...
please read on. |
 |
|
Note that your website's primary name is used as the virtual
directory name. You will want to be sure to not use the domain
extension at the end of your domain name. (ie. do not use
YOURDOMAIN.COM/YOURDOMAIN.COM) |
 |
|
Should you access the root FTP
site you will note there are no directories from
which to choose. You can use the "change
directory" command, then enter the name of your
Virtual Directory. The name of your Virtual
Directory is your primary domain name, minus the
root extension as mentioned above. |
 |
|
Several FTP programs allow you to specify the starting directory
for FTP access. You may want to save your Virtual Directory name
(ie. /YOURDOMAIN) as the starting directory. |
 |
|
DreamWeaver can be successfully modified by
going to DEFINE SITE - SELECT SITE (select your site hosted at
QuantumHost) - PROPERTIES. In the remote server settings enter
your primary domain name (YOURDOMAIN.COM)... in the HOST
DIRECTORY enter your Virtual Directory name... ie. YOURDOMAIN.
You should not use "/YOURDOMAIN" as the Host Directory name...
be sure to leave out the slash. |
 |
|
Access is still protected. Be sure to have your
username and password handy when accessing your
site via FTP. |
